Roadmap - Step One

Step 1: Understand the Basics

The Terrain: The Workforce Development System

The workforce development system is large and complex and comprised of thousands of organizations and agencies with different missions, funding sources, and histories. Find out more about the thousands of organizations involved in the workforce development system by clicking here.

Facts and Statistics about Youth and Youth with Disabilities

An unacceptably high number of youth fail to graduate from high school and find meaningful employment and fulfilling, independent adult lives. Youth with disabilities are especially at risk and are disproportionately represented in foster care, the juvenile justice and adult corrections systems, and the unemployment line. Find information that can help professionals prepare grants and family and youth learn about the way government tracks both people and programs.

Terminology

There are a dizzying number of agencies and organizations comprising the workforce development system, and most have their own terminology, acronyms, rules, and requirements for getting services. The acronyms and definitions sections will help you make sense of this alphabet soup.

White Papers

To understand what youth need to do to be prepared for the world of work and how to help make connections between the members of the emerging workforce and employers a series of white papers has been developed focusing on a range of key issues that professionals supporting youth need to address need to understand and act upon.
